Sharing is caring!

It’s with nice honor that the Ocean Conservancy’s Ocean Justice group publicizes the launch of the primary annual Ocean Justice Small Grants (OJSG). OJSG is likely one of the applications borne out of Ocean Conservancy’s dedication to fairness and justice. Our advocacy for the worldwide ocean is grounded in our dedication to ocean justice—which we outline because the honest and equitable distribution of each the advantages of the ocean’s bounty and the burdens of its advanced care. As a result of international ocean inequalities take form in a myriad of how, our work as an ocean advocacy group should be considerate, agile, intentional; and at all times oriented towards the polestar of a more healthy ocean, protected by a extra simply world.

Local weather change and environmental injustices disproportionately affect marginalized communities. Subsequently, we can not try to resolve these twin crises with out first addressing the systemic social and financial inequalities that have an effect on these communities. In our work on the Ocean Justice group, we search to middle the management of Black, Indigenous and Individuals of Shade (BIPoC), and different marginalized identification communities in creating ocean community-based options. We’re totally investing in our concept of change by making use of an intersectional environmental lens to our growth of the Ocean Justice Small Grants program.

Via OJSG, we search to help and uplift the continuing work of coastal neighborhood teams and push the needle ahead on their domestically led tasks. Via our small grants program, Ocean Conservancy hopes to leverage our sources to highlight and amplify the wonderful conservation work of underrepresented frontline communities. And connecting our grantees to Ocean Conservancy’s community, in addition to to one another, helps to domesticate an area for these traditionally neglected communities to share experience and create genuine partnerships as they resolve local weather and ocean points on the floor stage.

With these grants, we want to fund tasks that sit on the intersection of a mess of marginalized identities, and in addition advance our ocean justice mission in 5 key methods:

  • strengthening coastal communities
  • selling sustainable fishing and conventional indigenous practices
  • defending communities’ connections to the ocean
  • advancing ocean improvements
  • creating new ocean leaders

Please observe that on this first spherical of grants we’re solely accepting candidates from the U.S. and U.S. territories.
